Materials Engineer and Translator-Technical Writer

Failure analyst for mechanical design and manufacturing: causes of manufacturing defects

Translator and technical writer through German, French and Italian

Progetti
PROJECTS
CERN (Geneva, CH)
MARCH 2009 September 2010

Enrolled in the S.I.T. (Superconductors Irradiation Test) research team, Mr. Liberati worked on the DoE (Design of Experiment) and implementation of a new engineering and scientific campaign, that was aimed to test the radiation resistance of Nb3Sn superconducting wires; these materials have been later used in the luminosity (power) enhancement of the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator

(High Lumi LHC - project), starting from 2016.

Applied Materials Switzerland (Lausanne)
NOVEMBER 2010 December 2011

Employed within the Solar Businness Unit, Mr. Liberati managed a project for the dimensional control of parts and assemblies of special CNC systems, that are designed to manufacture aerospace solar panels. He led a team of technicians in dimensional (quality) control, and acted as technical interface between the project team and suppliers in product non-conformance assessment and treatment.

Leonardo Helicopters (formerly AgustaWestland)
January 2012 - December 2012

M&MC’s owner worked in the Failure Analysis research group, and characterized failures of structural and mechanical prototype parts, to identify their causes and support the development (under mandate of the turkish army) of the AW129 - Mangoose into the T129 - Atak fighter helicopter.

Rolls-Royce Plc (Dahlewitz, Germany)
January 2014 - July 2015

Mr. Liberati was employed in the Supplier Quality Assurance Department, and assessed the manufacturing non-conformances (Concessions, DARs) of critical parts of Jet Engines from a materials engineering point of view, treating them as per ISO 9100, EASA (748/2012, Part 145) and Lean 6σ principles, and in continuous interface with suppliers. He designed re-work procedures for each detected non-conformance, to ensure and certify flight safety.

NASA - JPL (Pasadena, US)
October 2014 - July 2015

In collaboration with the JPL Staff and under mandate of Rolls-Royce Deutschland GmbH, Mr. Liberati qualified suppliers of prototypes parts for a new model of jet engine, as he verified and validated the conformance of materials to the ASTM and AMS standards, ensuring highest performances and reliability of the prototypes

Italian Space Agency
(Milan-Bicocca headquarters)
July 2016 - September 2017

As materials and special process specialist of the research team, and within the international collaboration for the VEGA launcher program, Liberati qualified suppliers of prototype parts, starting from his F.E.M. (stress analysis) calculations to lighten aero-structures, up to validate the supplies conformance to ASTM, AMS and Nadcap materials standards, and supervise optimization campaigns of different manufacturing processes at supplier’s plants.

AREAS OF COMPETENCE
Materials Engineer

Specialized in the production technologies of materials for various types of applications, the Materials Engineer is an expert in the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of materials, whether in bulk form or coatings.

The Materials Engineer is a technician who supports the choice of the most suitable material for the given application, searches for the causes of damage to the material using advanced laboratory tools, and proposes appropriate protection methods.

The Materials Engineer also supports the optimization of the production process parameters, balancing production costs and product quality.

Failure Analysis

It is the discipline that researches and identifies the possible causes of subsidence, damage or production defects of materials of different types, by means of advanced investigation techniques and laboratory tools.

Starting from Root-to-Cause processes of the Ishikawa, 5Why and FMEA types, conducted in collaboration with the customer, the Failure Analyst characterizes mechanical, structural or semi-finished parts, identifies the probable causes of failures or manufacturing defects, and proposes to the customer possible solutions, understood as modifications of the design, protection techniques or modifications of the production process of the piece.

Translator

Interpreter of the meaning of a text, and of the specific syntax and terminology used, he transposes the text from a source language (from which it is translated) into a target language (in which it is translated).

The modern translator works with IT tools, such as CAT - Computer Aided Translation, which optimize the text in the target language, acting on translation memories (Translation Memories), and terminological databases (Termbases), and adapt the translated text to specific needs. and client communication objectives, in contexts where communication is becoming increasingly important, such as commerce, medicine, tourism and engineering.

Technical Writer

The technical writer may be an expert in a particular field, but in any case he must be able to consult the experts and do the necessary research to produce accurate and comprehensive documentation.

In addition to the competence in a particular sector, the technical writer is appreciated for his skills in technical writing in the language, such as those of collecting information, analyzing both the topic and the target audience and knowing how to report information to the latter. clearly, completely, unambiguously and as concisely as possible.

Metallurgy

Metallurgy is the technical discipline that essentially concerns the study of metals, their behavior and the technical procedures related to their obtaining and processing: it was born in prehistoric times, formally with the copper age, but they can be fully considered metallurgical techniques those in use during the Bronze Age.

The metallurgist is a metallurgical technician who studies the properties of metals, both to develop their properties or production processes, and to investigate the causes of their subsidence, damage or production defects.

Materials Laboratory

An area dedicated to the study of the behavior and characteristics of materials, to develop their properties, production processes or to research the causes of their failures, damage or production defects.

A materials laboratory is typically equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for sample preparation, and other tools, such as microscopes, mechanical testing machines, treatment furnaces, spectrometers, designed to characterize the microscopic nature of materials, to search for correlations. with macroscopic chemical-physical-mechanical properties.

TOOLS & METHODS
lean six sigma
Lean Six Sigma

Thanks to the Lean Six Sigma methodology, the company can benefit from the application of principles:

Six Sigma : focus on variability and reduction of process defects.

Lean Production : focus on eliminating waste and optimizing resources in production processes.

SDL Trados Studio R2019

CAT-software (Computer Aided Translation), that is able to work on different types of files (*.html, *.doc, *.xml, *.pdf, *.ppt etc.) to optimize the translation respect to the style and lexicon of the given application domain.

Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA)

Lets efficietly manage the Root-Cause process (that is, the analysis and identification of the possible failure modes) in the design of a part, as well in the optimization of the production process (internal or at supplier‘s plants), and even in the case of audits.

Material and regulatory databases

As materials specialist, who is qualified for mechanical and structural design, Materials databases and standards represent my natural references in materials application engineering, according to design specification and applicable to vaste range of products.

Failure analysis and materials testing laboratory

Expert of these experimental techniques and procedures, I act as interface between my costumers and accredited laboratories, to identify the necessary testing techniques according to costumer’s needs, eventually in parallel to tests in the costumer’s manufacturing line (or at supplier’s plants).

Testimonianze
TESTIMONIALS

Due to the respect of NDA, reference letters are only available upon request of the costumer.
